Qing Dynasty ‘Tang War Horse’ Bronze Statue
Revival of Tang Horse Bronze during 18th & 19th Century China
This beautiful Qing war horse sculpture is a bronze replica of an authentic artifact dating to the Tang dynasty. During this period, the horse formed the backbone of the Chinese military and economy and became a powerful symbol of imperial China that featured in many of its artworks. Horses were also bred for recreation and leisure, and both polo and dressage became fashionable activities among the wealthy and powerful.
This stately bronze Tang War Horse statue depicts a horse with four legs on the soil, slightly bowed head, heavy musculature, ornate saddle and drape, ‘protective’ shields and a ribbon wrapped around the tail.
Tang sculptures combined the sensuality of Indian and Persian art and the strength of the Tang empire itself. Art critic Julie Salamon wrote in the New York Times, that artists in the Tang dynasty “absorbed influences from all over the world, synthesized them and a created a new multiethnic Chinese culture.”
